What:

An appeal for donations to help save the life of mother of Doctor Usman Khan (Mrs. Sughra Bibi), resident of Afandi Colony, Sadiqabad, Rawalpindi. Mrs. Sughra Bibi is suffering from Liver Cancer and is now due to undergo a Liver Transplant Operation as a last, life-saving option.

Why:

This appeal was brought to APPEC’s notice by Usman himself who found APPEC through a web search while looking for Liver Transplant Operation options in Pakistan. Usman works as a doctor (Rig Medic) in oilfield sector, overseas. His contact number is +92 336 5013275. He will keep us updated on the progress of the operation. One of the APPEC members in Pakistan, Mansur Khan, has met Usman and the Touseef Ahmed (Liver Transplant Coordinator) at Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad. This Pakistani brother’s mother is in need of our help.

When:

Usman’s mother was previously under treatment at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore. She was discharged from SKMC Hospital as her conditioned worsended and the cancer reached a terminal stage and could no further be treated. The final option is to undergo a Liver Transplant Surgery. At present, Usman’s mother is under treatment at Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad. The tentative operation date has been set to first week of July, 2013. Usman’s brother is volunteering as the donor for the Liver Transplant. In Mansur’s meeting with the hospital staff, a very high hope for the success of the surgery has been expressed by them.
Update [03-07-2013]. Liver Transplant Operation date pushed forward to 9th of July (tentative date) due to re-planning of other emergency transplant surgeries at the hospital.
Update [09-07-2013]. Liver Transplant Operation confirmed for 12th of July. Please pray for the success of the surgery.
Update [12-07-2013]. Liver Transplant Operation completed with success. Alhamdulillah. The patient (Mrs Sughra Bibi) and the donor (her son) have been transfered to ICU after the operation.
Update [21-07-2013]. Aoa.. Asim here, Dr. Usman’s brother. Umar will be discharged today inshaaAllah from hospital. Mother has been shifted to room a day before yesterday. She is getting improved day by day mash’Allah. Now she walks in her room take good diet and talk sensibly. Thanks. Regards.. Asim.
Update [24-07-2013]. Mrs. Sugra Bibi discharged from hospital. Hospital dues have been paid by Usman. Jazak Allah to all donors for their generous contribution.
Update [06-08-2013]. Usman’s mother (Mrs. Sughra Bibi) re-admitted in Shifa International since Friday (2nd August) in ICU due to collapse and failure of her lungs and respiratory system. She is on respiratory support, however the test results of liver-transplant acceptance by the body are alright. Until day before yesterday, the doctors were hopeless of any chances of recovery, but since yesterday they are becoming hopeful again that she might recover, thanks to yesterday’s improving lab reports concerning lung tests.
Update [07-08-2013]. The previously collected amount of PKR 40 Lac (including PKR 681’600 collected through our fundraising campaign) in Usman’s Pakistan Bank Account was all used up in the liver-transplant operation. Now, since the 2nd of August, the ICU expenses have totaled PKR 600’000 (only in 5 days) and are increasing at the rate of PKR 100’000 every day. Usman discussed his financial situation with a Mufti & Aalim (referred by Sir Mansur) and the conclusion is that he is eligible for Zakat.
Update [09-08-2013]. APPEC has transfered the amount of EUR 1058/- from the fundraising carried out for Usman’s mother to his account, in order to pay a part of the rapidly increasing hospital bill.
Update [12-08-2013]. Hospital Expenses have reached PKR 800’000. Hospital is asking for the payment. Usman’s family is considering seling their last remaining asset – the house. Mrs. Sughra Bibi is recovering, Alhamdulillah. Although, all internal organs are improving, Mrs. Sughra Bibi is still fighting against the potentially deadly medical condition characterized by a whole-body inflammatory state (called a systemic inflammatory response syndrome or SIRS) caused by severe internal infection. Also known as Sepsis, it reflects the presence of pathogenic organisms in the bloodstream. APPEC has launched a complimentary fundraising campaign to help the poor family with the huge hospital bills. Please pray for her and donate as generously as you can.

How:

Here’re the details of the cost estimates for the liver transplant surgery:
– Approximately Rupees 4.0 Million to be submitted to the hospital before the operation.
Update [03-07-2013]. Expected discount through an APPEC contact: Approximately Rupees 0.5 Million (not confirmed yet, under negociation).
Update [09-07-2013]. Hospital fees remained fixed at Rupees 4.0 Million.
– Approximately Rupees 2.8 Million have been collected by the family so far, by pooling all of their resources and selling family property.
– Approximately Rupees 0.45 Million have been pledged by donors, volunteers and helpers in family’s circle of contacts.
– Approximately Rupees 0.75 Million are needed to go ahead with the Liver Transplant Operation.
The patient is undergoing medical tests presently, the reports of some of which are attached. While the necessary arrangements for the liver transplant operation are being made and the surgery is being scheduled, we are launching a fundraising campaign to collect donations in our academic and professional circles. This way, the moment the initial deposit is accumulated, Mrs. Sughra Bibi can undergo surgery without wasting any more time. The donation drive shall stay open until the operation date. Please donate generously and please spread the message far and wide. Please feel free to copy and paste the text from here to your blog sites, email groups, social media pages and other information dissemination channels. Unless explicitly mentioned by the donor, all donations will be treated as a ‘gift’ towards this cause. If you wish to give donation as a loan, please mention that specifically and we will see how to go about it.

After the successful completion of the operation, he was kind to share a detailed debriefing of his experience. There are several highly-critical top-priority pieces of information in the narrative. We have put it up in an openly-accessible document here, for general awareness: http://waqqasakhtar.blogspot.com/2010/01/fund-raising-for-liver-transplant. We intend to update the document with more information after the successful completion (Inshallah) of this operation.

Abu Huraira (May Allah be Pleased With Him) reported Allah’s Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) as saying, “He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection; and he who finds relief for one who is hard pressed, Allah would make things easy for him in the Hereafter; and he who conceals [the faults of] a Muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and in the hereafter. Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother; and he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah [mosques] and recite the Book of Allah [Al-Quran] and they learn and teach the Qur’an [among themselves], there would descend upon them the tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah makes a mention of them in the presence of those near Him; but he who is slow-paced in doing good deeds, his [high] descent does not make him go ahead.” From: Sahih Muslim – Book No. 35 “Kitab Al-Zikr”; Number 6518.
